Hospice of West Alabama (HOWA) has provided care to terminally ill patients and their families since May of 1982. It is incorporated as a 501(C) 3 private non-profit organization and is governed by a 25 member Board of Directors.The agency is the oldest provider of hospice services in the West Alabama area and is a member of the United Way of West Alabama. HOWA is certified to provide services under the Medicare and Medicaid programs and is an approved provider for the Blue Cross Blue Shield of Alabama. In 1998, HOWA became the first community based hospice in Alabama to attain accreditation by The Joint Commission.Hospice of West Alabama is the only agency serving West Alabama with its own free-standing inpatient facility, which has served more than 4,000 patients since it opened on November 1, 2004.The agency staff of more than 90 individuals serves hundreds of patients annually in Tuscaloosa, Pickens, Greene, Hale, Bibb, Fayette, and Lamar counties.

*Hospice focuses on caring, not curing and, in most cases, care is provided in the person’s home.*Hospice care also is provided in freestanding hospice centers – such as HOWA's Helen H. Hahn House – hospitals, and nursing homes and other long-term care facilities.*Hospice services are available to patients of any age, religion, race, or illness.*Hospice care is covered under Medicare, Medicaid, most private insurance plans, HMOs, and other managed care organizations. Community donations and participation as a United Way agency also enable HOWA to provide care for anyone physically eligible for hospice care.

Hospice affirms life, and neither hastens nor postpones death.Hospice is a coordinated program of palliative and supportive services provided in both home and inpatient settings, which provides for a physical, psychological, social and spiritual care for dying persons and their families.
