Current Florida Gambling Laws
Florida may have been the first U.S. state to legalize horse and greyhound racing, yet it looks unlikely online poker will be coming to the Sunshine State any time soon.
Being the third-most-populous state in the country, Florida legalizing online poker would be a major coup for players and could pave the way for other states to follow suit, but there are several obstacles in online poker's way despite Florida being a hotbed of live poker.
Poker was regulated in Florida in 1994, casinos in 2004, and the state boasts of estimated gambling revenue of $7 billion. There are 32 casinos dotted around Florida and 29 poker rooms. However, the only current form of legal online gambling is horse racing.
In 2014, the Florida Senate Gaming Committee released a gaming reform bill that completely omitted online gaming, although it did address online wagering where it prohibited the operation of an online wagering business and the transmission of information for gambling purposes.
More recently, during the 2018 midterm elections, Florida residents voted on two pieces of legislation affecting gambling.
One amendment saw voters approved applying the measure to make it more difficult for gaming companies to build new casinos in Florida. Another saw Floridians approve the banning of greyhound racing in the states, meaning all eleven tracks have to cease operating before 2021.
One other major stumbling block for online poker is the state's Governor Ron DeSantis. DeSantis is a stout Republican and a fierce ally of President Donald Trump who in turn was heavily supported financially by billionaire Sheldon Adelson during his Presidential campaign.
Adelson made the largest donation in both 2012 and 2016 and has fought hard to prevent online gaming in recent years despite being the founder, Chairman, and CEO of Las Vegas Sands (The Venetian.)
